Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra

दशरथकृत शनि स्तोत्र

जब शनि देव की दृष्टि रोहिणी पर पड़ने को थी, तब राजा दशरथ स्वयं उनके सम्मुख गए और यह स्तुति की। शनि देव प्रसन्न हुए। यही वह स्तोत्र है, आठ श्लोकों में, जैसा पद्म पुराण में आया है।

When Shani Dev's gaze was about to fall upon Rohini, King Dasharath went before him himself and made this praise. Shani Dev was pleased. These are the eight shlokas, as they appear in the Padma Purana.

About these verses

Each shloka is a salutation. The stotra names Shani Dev by his forms and his epithets rather than telling a story, which is why it is recited straight through rather than studied verse by verse.

    नमः कृष्णाय नीलाय शितिकण् निभाय च। नमः कालाग्निरूपाय कृतान्ताय च वै नमः ॥1॥

    नमस्ते कोटराक्षाय दुर्नरीक्ष्याय वै नमः । नमो घोराय रौद्राय भीषणाय कपालिने॥4॥

    नमस्ते सर्वभक्षाय वलीमुखायनमोऽस्तुते। सूर्यपुत्र नमस्तेऽस्तु भास्करे भयदाय च ॥5॥

    अधोदृष्टेः नमस्तेऽस्तु संवर्तक नमोऽस्तुते। नमो मन्दगते तुभ्यं निरिस्त्रणाय नमोऽस्तुते ॥6॥

    तपसा दग्धदेहाय नित्यं योगरताय च । नमो नित्यं क्षुधार्ताय अतृप्ताय च वै नमः ॥7॥

    ज्ञानचक्षुर्नमस्तेऽस्तु कश्यपात्मज सूनवे । तुष्टो ददासि वै राज्यं रुष्टो हरसि तत्क्षणात् ॥8॥

About these verses

A published romanisation, for reciting without reading Devanagari. It follows a fuller recension than the eight shlokas above: it opens with the dhyana of Saraswati and Ganesha and the line naming Dasharatha, and continues past the eighth shloka. Given whole rather than split across the verses above, because the two do not align line for line and pairing them would put the wrong words beside a verse.

The Stotra has been recited in countless households and printed in many editions. If the words you keep differ a little from these, your reading is not wrong - it is another line of the same living tradition.

About this text and where it comes from

The eight shlokas as they are commonly printed and recited. Where this text is republished online it is almost always credited to the Bhavishya Purana; it is verifiable at Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda chapter 33. If your edition differs in small spellings, that is the ordinary variation of a text copied by hand for centuries.
