The Shani mantra
Shani Dev is remembered by name, quietly and often. These are the recitations kept for him, with their meaning, and a mala for keeping your own count. The tradition offers the practice itself. Never a number that switches anything off.
The seed mantra
ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः
Oṃ Śaṃ Śanaiścarāya Namaḥ
Om - salutations to Shanaishchara, the slow-moving one.
Keep your count
A mala for your own recitation
Tap the bead each time you recite. A full round is 108, the traditional count kept on a mala. Your count stays on this device. It is a personal aid, nothing is sent anywhere, and no total reached does anything on its own.
Activating this button adds one to your recitation count. At 108 a round completes and the count returns to zero.

The recitations
Three mantras kept for Shani Dev
The seed mantra
Shani Beej Mantra
ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः
Oṃ Śaṃ Śanaiścarāya Namaḥ
Om - salutations to Shanaishchara, the slow-moving one.
The short seed mantra, and the one most people mean by Shani mantra jaap. Kept in high counts, traditionally in rounds of 108 on a mala.
The mantra of obeisance
Shani Pranam Mantra
नीलाञ्जनसमाभासं रविपुत्रं यमाग्रजम्।
छायामार्तण्डसम्भूतं तं नमामि शनैश्चरम्॥
Nīlāñjana-samābhāsaṃ raviputraṃ yamāgrajam,
chāyā-mārtaṇḍa-sambhūtaṃ taṃ namāmi śanaiścaram.
To him who shines like blue collyrium, son of the Sun, elder brother of Yama, born of Chhaya and the Sun - to that Shanaishchara I bow.
The verse of salutation from the Navagraha stotra. Recited once, or a few times, as an act of reverence rather than in high count.
The Gayatri
Shani Gayatri Mantra
ॐ शनैश्चराय विद्महे छायापुत्राय धीमहि।
तन्नो मन्दः प्रचोदयात्॥
Oṃ Śanaiścarāya vidmahe chāyāputrāya dhīmahi,
tanno mandaḥ pracodayāt.
We contemplate Shanaishchara; we meditate upon the son of Chhaya. May that Manda impel our understanding.
The Gayatri form addressed to Shani, kept more often in formal worship than in high-count jaap.
On how the recitation is counted, and what it means to have jaap performed in your name, see Shani mantra jaap.
When you cannot be there in person
Have the mantra recited in your name, in India.
We perform the Shani puja, the mantra jaap included, with your name and gotra stated in the sankalp, and send you the recording. The recitation is something you can watch, not something you have to take on trust.
