Shani Mahadasha remedies

In the Vimshottari dasha system, the Shani Mahadasha is a period of nineteen years in which Saturn is held to be the governing planetary influence over a life. It is a different thing from Sade Sati, and the two are constantly confused - including by people selling remedies for them.

How it differs from Sade Sati

Sade Sati is a transit: it depends on where Saturn actually is in the sky relative to your natal Moon, and it recurs roughly every thirty years. The Mahadasha is a period in a fixed sequence calculated from your birth Moon, and for most people it arrives once.

They can overlap, which is where much of the confusion comes from. They are assessed differently and the tradition does not treat them as the same thing.

What is traditionally undertaken

Because the period is long, the remedies handed down for it are the sustainable kind: regular rather than intense. Recitation on Saturdays, ongoing charity, and consistency in conduct.

The texts treat the Mahadasha as a period that rewards patience and steadiness, and the prescribed remedies mirror that. A single dramatic ritual is not what the tradition asks for over nineteen years.

What we can honestly offer

We perform Shani puja in your name and send you the recording. Some people book once; some ask us to perform it periodically through a long period. Either is fine, and we will not push you toward the second.

We do not sell packages that promise to "clear" a dasha, because that is not a thing anyone can sell.

What is traditionally done

Regular Saturday observance
Consistency over intensity - the pattern the tradition prescribes for a long period.
Shani mantra jaap
Recitation undertaken as an ongoing discipline rather than a one-off count.
Ongoing seva
Feeding, and service to the elderly and to labourers, sustained rather than performed once.
Til tel abhishek
Sesame oil abhishek, performed at intervals through the period.

Questions we are asked

Can Sade Sati and Shani Mahadasha happen together?

Yes, they can overlap. They are calculated separately and are not the same thing.

How often should a puja be performed during a Mahadasha?

There is no single answer in the tradition, and we are not going to invent one to sell you more. Many people mark it once; some observe it annually.

We perform Shani puja in your name

At our own centre in India, with your name and gotra recited in the sankalp, with a private video of your seva sent to you afterwards.

Next ceremony Saturday 8 August at our centre
