The King Who Went Up to Meet Him

ज्योतिषियों ने क्या आते देखा What the astrologers saw coming

अयोध्या के राजज्योतिषी राजा के पास एक गणना लेकर आए, और वे उसे उसी भाँति लाए जिस भाँति मनुष्य वह समाचार लाता है जिसके मिथ्या होने की वह कामना करता हो।

The court astrologers of Ayodhya brought the king a calculation, and they brought it the way men bring news they wish were wrong.

शनि देव रोहिणी की ओर बढ़ रहे थे। उसमें से नहीं। रोहिणी शकट की ओर, और गणना कहती थी कि जब वे उस योग को भेदेंगे तो बारह वर्ष वर्षा नहीं होगी।

Shani Dev was moving towards Rohini. Not through it. Towards the cart of Rohini, and the reckoning held that when he passed through that formation the rains would fail for twelve years.

बारह वर्ष। दशरथ राजा थे, अतः उन्होंने कोई अपशकुन नहीं सुना। उन्होंने सुना कि दूसरे वर्ष अन्न के भण्डार रीत जाएँगे और तीसरे वर्ष कुएँ उतर जाएँगे, और उन्होंने सुना कि चौथे वर्ष किसी गाँव के पिता को क्या निर्णय लेना पड़ेगा, और उन्हें दुबारा समझाने की आवश्यकता न रही।

Twelve years. Dasharatha was a king, so he did not hear a portent. He heard grain stores emptying in the second year and wells going down in the third, and he heard what a father in a village would have to decide in the fourth, and he did not need it explained again.

उन्होंने किसी को नहीं भेजा He does not send anyone

उन्होंने यज्ञ की आज्ञा देकर प्रतीक्षा नहीं की। उन्होंने अपनी ओर से प्रार्थना करने के लिए ब्राह्मणों का दल नहीं भेजा। उन्होंने रथ मँगवाया, धनुष उठाया, और स्वयं ऊपर गए।

He did not order sacrifices and wait. He did not send a delegation of brahmins to petition on his behalf. He had a chariot brought, and he took up his bow, and he went up himself.

समझिए यह क्या था। वे मनुष्य थे। श्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर, श्रेष्ठ राजा, और मनुष्य। वे वायु से ऊपर, पक्षियों से ऊपर, वहाँ तक रथ ले गए जहाँ नक्षत्र स्थित हैं, कि एक ग्रह के सम्मुख खड़े होकर उससे कहें कि मार्ग बदल दो।

Understand what that is. He was a man. A good archer, a good king, and a man. He drove up past the air and past the birds and out to where the nakshatras sit, to stand in front of a graha and tell him to turn aside.

And he got there, and he saw him.

उन्होंने धनुष रख दिया He puts the bow down

And Dasharatha, who had come armed, did not raise the bow.

वे उतरे और प्रणाम किया, और फिर उनकी स्तुति करने लगे। चाटुकारिता नहीं। उन्होंने उन्हें वैसा ही कहा जैसे वे वस्तुतः हैं, उन रूपों सहित जिनसे लोग डरते हैं, मन्द, श्याम, सूर्यपुत्र, वह जिसकी दृष्टि भारी है। उन्होंने यह सब उनके सम्मुख स्वर में कहा और किसी बात को कोमल नहीं किया।

He got down and he bowed, and then he began to praise him. Not to flatter him. He named him as he actually is, including the parts that frighten people, the slow one, the dark one, the son of the sun, the one whose glance is heavy. He said all of it out loud in front of him and did not soften any of it.

और फिर उन्होंने माँगा, और यही पूरी कथा है: उन्होंने अयोध्या नहीं माँगी। उन्होंने समस्त प्राणियों का कल्याण माँगा। मेरा राज्य नहीं। सबका।

And then he asked, and this is the whole story: he did not ask for Ayodhya. He asked for the welfare of all beings. Not my kingdom. Everyone.

वहाँ खड़े होकर उन्होंने जो शब्द कहे, वही दशरथ कृत शनि स्तोत्र है, और वह आज भी पढ़ा जाता है। हम उसे पूर्ण रूप में प्रकाशित करते हैं।

The words he said standing there are the Dashrath Krit Shani Stotra, and they are still recited. We publish them in full.

वरदान The boon

वे प्रसन्न हुए। परम्परा स्पष्ट है कि उन्हें स्तुति ने प्रसन्न नहीं किया। उन्हें यह बात प्रसन्न कर गई कि एक राजा इतनी दूर आया और फिर अपने लिए कुछ भी नहीं माँगा।

He was pleased. The tradition is clear that what pleased him was not the praise. It was that a king had come all that way and then asked for nothing for himself.

उन्होंने रोहिणी शकट का भेदन न करने का वचन दिया, और वर्षा नहीं छीनी गई।

He gave his word not to pass through the cart of Rohini, and the rains were not taken away.

देखिए यह किस प्रकार हुआ। दशरथ ने उन्हें जीता नहीं। उन्होंने उन्हें मोल नहीं लिया। वे स्वयं आए, उनके विषय में सत्य कहा, और उन लोगों के लिए माँगा जिन्हें कभी पता भी न चलेगा कि वे गए थे। इन समस्त कथाओं में केवल यही एक बात है जिसने शनि देव को कभी विचलित किया है, और वही बात विक्रमादित्य की कथा में है, और शेषनाग की कथा में भी, हर बार वही।

Notice how it went. Dasharatha did not defeat him. He did not buy him. He came in person, told the truth about him, and asked on behalf of people who would never know he had gone. That is the only thing in any of these stories that has ever moved Shani Dev, and it is the same thing that moves him in the Vikramaditya story, and in the Sheshnag story, every single time.
