The Look He Begged Not to Give
वह दृष्टि, जिसके लिए उन्होंने मना किया था
शनि देव किसी बालक को हानि पहुँचाने से अच्छा यह मानते हैं कि उन्हें अशिष्ट समझ लिया जाए। वे उस कक्ष के एक कोने में दृष्टि भूमि पर टिकाए खड़े रहे और उसे उठाने से मना करते रहे, और उन्होंने स्पष्ट बता दिया कि उठाने पर क्या होगा। उन्होंने जो सबसे दुःखद कार्य किया, यही है, और वे उसे करना नहीं चाहते थे।
Shani Dev would rather be thought rude than harm a child. He stood at the edge of that room with his eyes on the floor and refused to raise them, and he told her plainly what would happen if he did. This is the most sorrowful thing he ever did, and he did not want to do it.
सब उस शिशु को देखने आए Everyone came to see the child
पार्वती को पुत्र हुआ, और उन्होंने देवों को बुलाया कि आकर उसे देखें। कोई भी माता यही करती। वे चाहती थीं कि उसे देखा जाए, सराहा जाए, आशीर्वाद दिया जाए।
Parvati had a son, and she called the gods to come and see him. Any mother would. She wanted him looked at and admired and blessed.
वे आए, और एक के बाद एक उसकी प्रशंसा करते गए।
They came, and they praised him, one after another.
और शनि देव भी आए, और एक ओर खड़े रहे, दृष्टि भूमि पर।
And Shani Dev came too, and stood at the edge with his eyes on the floor.

उन्होंने एक अतिथि देखा जो उनके शिशु की ओर देखता ही न था।
She saw a guest who would not look at her baby.
सोचिए यह एक नई माता पर कैसे बीतता है। और सबने तो देखा था। और सबने कुछ न कुछ कहा था। यह एक ऐसा था जो मुख नीचा किए खड़ा था और उठाता ही न था, और उन्हें इसका केवल एक ही कारण सूझा।
Think how that lands on a new mother. Everyone else had looked. Everyone else had said something. This one stood there with his face turned down and would not raise it, and she could think of only one reason for that.
उन्होंने कहा, देखिए। उन्होंने मना किया। उन्होंने स्पष्ट बता दिया कि क्या होगा, क्योंकि वे पहले भी लोगों को बता चुके थे और जानते थे कि वे क्या लिए फिरते हैं।
She asked him to look. He said no. He told her plainly what would happen, because he had told people before and he knew exactly what he was carrying.

She pressed him. She was his host, she was a mother, and she believed she was being insulted in her own house.

उन्होंने क्षण भर को आँख उठाई, और गौरी के पुत्र का शीश आकाश में उड़ गया।
He raised his eyes for an instant, and the head of Gauri's son flew into the sky.
दो बार का भोगी Twice a victim
शिशु पुनः जीवित हुआ। गण उत्तर दिशा में गए और उस पहले प्राणी का शीश ले आए जो उस ओर मुख किए सो रहा था, एक गज, और वे गजानन होकर उठे और उसके बाद कहीं भी होने वाले हर संस्कार में उन्हें प्रथम स्थान मिला। कोई पूजा उनके बिना आरम्भ नहीं होती। यही अन्त है, और यह शुभ अन्त है।
The child was restored. The ganas went north and brought the head of the first creature they found sleeping facing that way, an elephant, and he rose as Gajanana and was given the first place in every rite performed anywhere thereafter. No worship begins without him. That is the ending, and it is a good one.
किन्तु क्षण भर शनि देव के साथ ठहरिए, क्योंकि कोई ठहरता ही नहीं।
But stay with Shani Dev for a moment, because nobody ever does.
वे देखना नहीं चाहते थे। उन्होंने स्वर में कहा था। एक माता के हठ ने उन्हें विवश किया कि वे वही एक कार्य करें जिससे बचने के लिए उन्होंने अपना समस्त जीवन गढ़ा था।
He did not want to look. He said so out loud. He was compelled by a mother's insistence into doing the one thing he had arranged his entire existence to avoid.
और जिस शाप ने उनकी दृष्टि को घातक बनाया, वह भी मूलतः उनकी अपनी भक्ति से आया था।
And the curse that made his glance lethal came from his own devotion in the first place.
अतः यहाँ वे दो बार भोगी हैं। उस शाप के, जो उन्होंने पुण्य से अर्जित किया, और उस याचना के, जिसे उन्होंने टालने का प्रयत्न किया।
So he is twice a victim here. Of a curse he earned by piety, and of a request he tried to refuse.
