The Oil He Was Given

वे वहीं जाते हैं जहाँ भेजे जाते हैं He goes where he is sent

हनुमान का समय आया, जैसे सबका आता है, और शनि देव उनके पास गए।

Hanuman's time came, as everyone's does, and Shani Dev went to him.

सोचिए इसमें क्या लगा होगा। ये हनुमान हैं। वही, जिन्होंने एक छलाँग में समुद्र लाँघा, जो पर्वत उठा लाए, जो जलती नगरी में गए और चलकर लौट आए। हनुमान के पास कोई समन नहीं भेजता।

Consider what that took. This is Hanuman. The one who crossed an ocean in a stride, who carried a mountain, who walked into a burning city and walked out of it. Nobody sends a summons to Hanuman.

शनि देव फिर भी गए, क्योंकि उनके पास एक पद है और वह पद उन्हें चुनने की छूट नहीं देता। वे हनुमान के मस्तक पर जा बैठे, परम्परा दशा के आगमन का वर्णन इसी रूप में करती है।

Shani Dev went anyway, because he holds an office and the office does not permit him to choose. He settled on Hanuman's head, which is how the tradition describes the transit arriving.

उतरो, हनुमान ने कहा।

Get down, Hanuman said.

और शनि देव नहीं उतरे। अभिमान से नहीं। वे उतर ही नहीं सकते थे। कोई सेवक शनिवार के बीच में यह निश्चय नहीं कर सकता कि अब वह सेवक नहीं रहेगा।

And Shani Dev did not get down. Not out of pride. He could not. A bailiff cannot decide to stop being a bailiff halfway through a Saturday.

तब हनुमान अपना कार्य करते रहे So Hanuman went on working

उन्होंने प्रहार नहीं किया। यह महत्त्वपूर्ण है, और लगभग हर कथा इसे खो देती है।

He did not strike him. That matters, and almost every retelling loses it.

वे बस वही करते रहे जो कर रहे थे, और करते-करते वे बढ़ते गए, जैसे वे बढ़ते हैं। और छत निकट आती गई। और हनुमान के मस्तक तथा ऊपर के पत्थर के बीच का स्थान घटता गया, और घटता गया, और शनि देव उसी स्थान में थे।

He simply carried on with what he had been doing, and as he worked he grew, the way he does. And the roof came closer. And the space between Hanuman's head and the stone above it got smaller, and smaller, and Shani Dev was in that space.

उन्होंने जितना सह सकते थे उतना सहा, क्योंकि वहाँ से जाना उनके चुनने की बात नहीं थी।

He bore it for as long as he could bear it, because leaving was not his to choose.

फिर उन्होंने उतार देने को कहा।

Then he asked to be let down.

और हनुमान ने उन्हें तत्काल उतार दिया।

And Hanuman let him down at once.

और फिर वे तेल ले आए And then he brought the oil

अब वह भाग जिसके लिए यह पूरी कथा है, और यही भाग काट दिया जाता है।

Here is the part the whole story exists for, and it is the part that gets cut.

हनुमान ने देखा कि उन्होंने अभी-अभी उनके साथ क्या किया है। उन चोटों को देखा। एक ग्रह को देखा, जो कक्ष की भूमि पर बैठा था, पीड़ित, और जो आया ही इसलिए था क्योंकि भेजा गया था।

Hanuman looked at what he had just done to him. At the bruises. At a graha sitting on the floor of a room, hurt, who had come only because he was sent.

और वे जाकर तेल ले आए, और अपने हाथों से उन पर लगाया।

And he went and got oil, and he treated them himself.

इसीलिए शनिवार को शनि देव पर तेल चढ़ाया जाता है। उन्हें मोल लेने के लिए नहीं। उन्हें नरम करने के लिए नहीं। वह वही है जो कभी उन्हें पीड़ा में दिया गया था, उस व्यक्ति के हाथों जिसने उन्हें चोट पहुँचाई थी और यह दिखावा नहीं किया कि नहीं पहुँचाई।

That is why oil is poured over Shani Dev on a Saturday. Not to buy him. Not to soften him. It is what was once given to him for pain, by someone who had hurt him and did not pretend he had not.

और शनि देव ने, जो अपने लिए कुछ नहीं लेते, बदले में वचन दिया: जो सच्चे रूप से हनुमान के हैं, उन पर वे कठोर नहीं होंगे।

And Shani Dev, who takes nothing for himself, gave his word in return: that those who are truly Hanuman's, he would not press hard.

एक सूने कक्ष में वे दो, एक तेल थामे और दूसरा लगवाता हुआ। वहाँ न कुछ मोल लिया गया, न कोई धमकी दी गई। केवल यही एक प्रकार का आदान-प्रदान है जिसे उन्होंने कभी स्वीकार किया है।

Two of them in an empty room, one holding the oil and one letting him. Nothing was bought there and nothing was threatened. That is the only kind of exchange he has ever accepted.
