Turned Away at Nandgaon

समस्त स्वर्ग उतर आया The whole of heaven comes down

जब कृष्ण का जन्म हुआ, नन्दगाँव भर उठा।

When Krishna was born, Nandgaon filled up.

वे सब ओर से आए। ऋषि उन गुफाओं से निकल आए जिन्हें उन्होंने सौ वर्षों से नहीं छोड़ा था। देव अपने निज तेज में उतरे। हर द्वार पर हल्दी थी और भोर से पहले से ढोल बज रहे थे, और यशोदा भीतर बैठी थीं, पुत्र गोद में, और समस्त सृष्टि उनके द्वार पर पंक्ति बाँधे उसे देखने खड़ी थी।

They came from everywhere. Sages walked out of caves they had not left in a hundred years. Gods came down in their own light. There was turmeric on every doorframe and drums going since before dawn, and Yashoda sat inside with her son in her lap while the whole of creation queued at her door to look at him.

और उन्होंने सबको भीतर आने दिया। एक के बाद एक, दिन भर। उन्होंने हर एक को भीतर आने दिया।

And she let them in. One after another, all day. She let every one of them in.

केवल एक को छोड़कर Except one

फिर शनि देव द्वार पर आए।

Then Shani Dev came to the door.

उन्होंने अपनी बारी की प्रतीक्षा की थी। वे सबकी भाँति इतनी दूर चलकर आए थे। और यशोदा द्वार पर खड़ी हो गईं और हटीं नहीं।

He had waited his turn. He had come the distance like everyone else. And Yashoda stood up in the doorway and did not move aside.

वे निष्ठुर न थीं। उन्हें समझिए। वे नवजात शिशु की माता थीं, और उन्होंने वही सुना था जो सबने सुना था: कि उनकी दृष्टि नष्ट कर देती है, कि पार्वती के पुत्र का शीश तब उतर गया जब उन्होंने आँख उठाई। उन्होंने द्वार पर खड़ी उस श्याम आकृति को देखा, फिर गोद के शिशु को देखा, और कह दिया, नहीं।

She was not cruel. Understand her. She was a mother with a newborn, and she had heard what everybody had heard: that his look destroys, that the head of Parvati's child came off when he raised his eyes. She looked at the dark figure at her door and then down at the baby in her arms, and she said no.

उन्होंने विवाद नहीं किया। उन्होंने यह नहीं कहा कि तुम भूल कर रही हो, न अपना पद बताया, न यह स्मरण कराया कि वे कौन हैं। वे क्षण भर खड़े रहे, फिर मुड़े और द्वार से चले गए, और वन में चले गए।

He did not argue. He did not tell her she was wrong, or invoke his office, or remind her what he was. He stood there for a moment, and then he turned around and walked away from the door, and he went into the forest.

वृक्षों के बीच उन्होंने क्या कहा What he said among the trees

वहाँ उन्हें सुनने वाला कोई न था। इसे स्मरण रखिए। उन्होंने जो कहा, बिना किसी श्रोता के कहा, और कहने से उन्हें कुछ मिलना भी न था।

There was nobody there to hear him. That is worth holding on to. What he said, he said with no audience and nothing to gain by saying it.

उन्होंने कहा: मैं सेवक हूँ। मुझे एक पद मिला और मैंने कभी एक बार भी उसे अपने लिए काम में नहीं लिया। मैं लोगों को वही देता हूँ जो उन्होंने अर्जित किया है, ठीक उतना ही, और उसमें से कुछ नहीं लेता। मैंने कभी किसी को प्रिय नहीं माना। मैंने कभी किसी मित्र को नहीं छोड़ा।

He said: I am a servant. I was given an office and I have never once used it for myself. I give people what they have earned, exactly what they have earned, and I take nothing from it. I have never chosen a favourite. I have never spared a friend.

और आज सृष्टि का हर देव खड़ा होकर उनके दर्शन कर सकता है। केवल मैं नहीं कर सकता।

And every god in creation may stand and look at Him today. Only I may not.

फिर वे बैठ गए और वही किया जो वे सदा करते आए हैं जब और कुछ शेष न बचे। उन्होंने अपना मन भगवान पर टिकाया और उसे हिलने न दिया।

Then he sat down and did what he has always done when there was nothing else left to do. He fixed his mind on God and he did not move it.

कोयल The cuckoo

ऊपर की डाल से एक पक्षी बोला।

A bird called from a branch above him.

कोयल। किसी भी भारतीय वन की सबसे साधारण ध्वनि, वह ध्वनि जिसे सुनना आप छोड़ देते हैं क्योंकि वह सदा वहीं रहती है। उन्होंने ऊपर देखा।

A kokila, a cuckoo, the commonest sound in any Indian forest, the sound you stop hearing because it is always there. He looked up.

और वह वही थे। उन्होंने संदेश नहीं भेजा था। उन्होंने शनि देव को घर बुलाकर सबके सामने आदर से भीतर नहीं बुलाया था। वे स्वयं वन में चले आए थे, अपने सबसे सीधे रूप में, और अकेले आए थे।

And it was Him. He had not sent word. He had not summoned Shani Dev back to the house to be admitted properly in front of everyone. He had simply come out to the forest, in the plainest form He had, and He had come alone.

यशोदा इसमें ठीक थीं कि शिशु की रक्षा होनी चाहिए। वे केवल इसमें भूल कर गईं कि रक्षा किससे चाहिए।

Yashoda had been right that a child should be protected. She had only been wrong about what he needed protecting from.

और कृष्ण ने उन्हें जो दिया, वह क्षमायाचना नहीं थी। वह एक स्थान था। यहीं रहो, उन्होंने कहा। लोग यहीं तुम्हारे पास आएँ। और जो यहाँ आकर तुमसे माँगे, वह जितना बोझ लेकर आया है, उससे हल्का होकर लौटे।

And what Krishna gave him was not an apology. It was a place. Stay here, He said. Let them come to you here. And whoever comes to you here and asks, let them go home lighter than they came.

कोकिलावन Kokilavan

वह वन आज भी है। कोसी कलाँ में, मथुरा के पास, और उसका नाम कोकिलावन है, कोयल का वन, उसी रूप पर जो भगवान ने तब धरा था जब वे उससे मिलने निकले जिसे लौटा दिया गया था।

The forest is still there. It is at Kosi Kalan, near Mathura, and it is called Kokilavan, the forest of the cuckoo, after the form God took when He came out to meet the one who had been turned away.

शनिवार को वह भर जाता है। लोग तेल और काले तिल लेकर आते हैं और उनके सम्मुख खड़े होकर वे बातें कहते हैं जो और कहीं मुँह से नहीं निकालते।

On Saturdays it fills up. People come with oil and with black sesame and they stand in front of him and tell him things they would not say aloud anywhere else.

वे ठीक उसी स्थान पर खड़े होते हैं जहाँ वे उस दिन खड़े थे, जिस दिन किसी ने उन्हें भीतर नहीं आने दिया।

They are standing where he was standing on the day nobody would let him in.
