The Boy the Tree Raised
वह बालक, जिसे वृक्ष ने पाला
शनि देव एक भली प्रकार की गई विनती के सम्मुख झुक जाते हैं, और उन्होंने कभी किसी और वस्तु के सम्मुख नहीं झुका। एक बालक, जिसने अपने माता-पिता में से किसी को नहीं देखा, उसने उन्हें दृष्टि से जला देने की शक्ति पा ली। उस बालक ने इसके बदले जो माँगा, उसी कारण कहा जाता है कि छोटा बालक बच जाता है, और उसी कारण शनिवार को पीपल की जड़ में जल चढ़ाया जाता है।
Shani Dev yields to a well made request, and he has never once yielded to anything else. A boy who never saw either parent won the power to burn him with a look. What that boy asked for instead is the reason a small child is said to be spared, and the reason water is poured at the root of a peepal on Saturdays.
वह पिता, जिसने अपनी अस्थियाँ दे दीं A father who gave away his bones
ऋषि दधीचि एक ही बात के लिए स्मरण किए जाते हैं। देवों को ऐसा शस्त्र चाहिए था जिसे रोका न जा सके, और उतनी कठोर वस्तु केवल एक थी: उस पुरुष की रीढ़, जिसने कभी एक बार भी अपना नियम नहीं तोड़ा।
The sage Dadhichi is remembered for one thing. The gods needed a weapon that could not be resisted, and the only material hard enough was the spine of a man who had never once broken his discipline.
वे आए और उनसे उनकी अस्थियाँ माँगीं। वे उस समय जीवित थे। उन्होंने हाँ कही, और बैठ गए, और देह छोड़ दी ताकि वे ले सकें।
They came and asked him for his bones. He was alive at the time. He said yes, and sat down, and left his body so that they could take it.
उनकी पत्नी गर्भवती थीं। उन्होंने शिशु को जन्म दिया, फिर अपने पति के पीछे चली गईं, और जाने से पहले उस शिशु को एक पीपल के वृक्ष के नीचे रख गईं।
His wife was carrying a child. She gave birth, and then she followed her husband, and before she went she left the infant at the foot of a peepal tree.
उस वृक्ष ने उसे पाला। इस कथा में यह कोई अलंकार नहीं है। वह उसी के नीचे रहा, और उसी ने उसे पोसा, और उसी से उसका नाम पड़ा: पिप्पलाद, पिप्पल का।
The tree raised him. That is not a figure of speech in this story. He lived under it, and it fed him, and he took his name from it: Pippalada, of the pippala.
वह प्रश्न, जो हर अनाथ पूछता है The question every orphan asks
वह बड़ा हुआ, और एक दिन उसने वही प्रश्न पूछा जो हर अनाथ पूछता है। मैं ही क्यों। मुझे उन दोनों में से एक भी क्यों नहीं मिला। न माता, न पिता, एक दिन के लिए भी नहीं।
He grew up, and one day he asked the question that every orphan asks. Why me. Why was I not given even one of them. Not a mother, not a father, not for a single day.
और उसे बताया गया कि उसके पिता की मृत्यु के समय उन पर शनि की दशा थी।
And he was told that his father had been under the period of Shani when he died.
इतना पर्याप्त था। वह दधीचि का पुत्र था, अर्थात् वह वही कर सकता था जो उसके पिता कर सकते थे, और वह बैठ गया और तब तक तप किया जब तक उसे वर देने की बात न कही गई। उसने एक ही वस्तु माँगी: वह जिस पर दृष्टि डाले, वह जल जाए।
That was enough. He was a child of Dadhichi, which meant he could do what his father could do, and he sat down and performed austerity until a boon was offered him. He asked for one thing: that whatever he looked at would burn.
वह उसे मिल गया। और फिर वह शनि देव को खोजने निकल पड़ा।
He got it. And then he went looking for Shani Dev.
उसने इसके बदले क्या माँगा What he asked for instead
उसने उन्हें पा लिया, और उन पर दृष्टि डाली, और शनि देव भागे। कथा कहती है कि जाते हुए वे गिर पड़े, और उन्हें लँगड़ाता हुआ क्यों कहा जाता है, उसका एक कारण यही बताया जाता है।
He found him, and he looked at him, and Shani Dev ran. The story says he fell as he went, and that is one of the tellings of why he is described as limping.
ब्रह्मा आए और उन्होंने रोका। शनि देव की रक्षा के लिए नहीं, बल्कि इसलिए कि आकाश से जला दिया गया ग्रह अपने साथ सारी व्यवस्था ले डूबता है। उन्होंने उस बालक से छोड़ देने को कहा, और बदले में वर देने को कहा।
Brahma came and stopped it. Not to protect Shani Dev, but because a graha burned out of the sky takes the order of things with him. He asked the boy to let go, and offered him boons for it.
और अब वह मोड़, और यह वही मोड़ है जो विक्रमादित्य और दशरथ का था, किन्तु यहाँ वह उस व्यक्ति ने लिया जिसके पास अपने लिए माँगने के उन दोनों से कहीं अधिक कारण थे।
And here is the turn, and it is the same turn as Vikramaditya and Dasharatha, made by someone with more reason than either of them to ask for himself.
उसने अपने माता-पिता नहीं माँगे। उसने वे वर्ष नहीं माँगे जो उसने एक वृक्ष के नीचे, बिना किसी के, बिताए थे।
He did not ask for his parents back. He did not ask for the years he had spent under a tree with nobody.
उसने यह माँगा कि शनि देव किसी छोटे बालक पर न पड़ें, ताकि कोई और शिशु वैसा न रह जाए जैसा वह रह गया था। और उसने यह माँगा कि जो पीपल को जल दे, उसका भार हल्का हो।
He asked that Shani Dev should not fall upon a small child, so that no other infant would be left the way he had been. And he asked that whoever gives water to a peepal tree should be eased.
उस अनाथ ने अपने जीवन की एकमात्र शक्ति इसी में लगा दी कि यह किसी और के साथ न हो। यही कथा है। शनिवार को पीपल, और उसकी जड़ में जल, वही याचना है, जो आज भी की जा रही है।
The orphan used the only power he ever had to make sure it would not happen to anyone else. That is the story. The peepal on a Saturday, and the water at its root, is that request, still being made.
