Face Down Beneath the Throne

वह पुरुष, जो तौला जाना नहीं चाहता था A man who would not be judged

रावण मूर्ख न था। वह वेदों का ज्ञाता था, वीणा का सिद्ध वादक, शिव का ऐसा उग्र भक्त कि उसने अपने शीश काटकर चढ़ा दिए थे। उसने ब्रह्मा से वर पाए थे। वह स्वर्ण की नगरी का स्वामी था।

Ravana was not a fool. He was a scholar of the Vedas, a master of the veena, a devotee of Shiva so fierce that he had cut off his own heads in offering. He had won boons from Brahma. He ruled a city of gold.

और वह ठीक-ठीक समझता था कि ग्रह क्या हैं। वे वही हैं जो मनुष्य को उसका अर्जित फल पहुँचाते हैं।

And he understood exactly what the grahas were. They were the ones who deliver to a man what that man has earned.

अतः उसने उन्हें, नौ के नौ को, पकड़कर अपने सिंहासन के नीचे तलघर में डाल दिया, और उन्हें मुख भूमि की ओर लिटा दिया ताकि उनमें से कोई भी उसके राज्य की ओर आँख न उठा सके।

So he took them, all nine, and he put them in the cellar beneath his throne, and he laid them face down so that not one of them could look up at his kingdom.

समझिए वह वस्तुतः क्या कर रहा था। वह किसी शत्रु से नहीं लड़ रहा था। वह ऐसा जीवन रचने का प्रयत्न कर रहा था जिसमें उसका किया हुआ कभी लौटकर उस तक न आए।

He was not fighting an enemy. He was arranging a life in which nothing he did would ever come back to him, and he walked over the floor they were under every day of it.

जलती नगरी में वह वानर The monkey in the burning city

हनुमान सीता को खोजने आए थे, पकड़े गए थे, और उन्हें लज्जित करने के लिए उनकी पूँछ में तेल में भीगा वस्त्र लपेटकर आग लगा दी गई थी।

Hanuman had come looking for Sita, and had been caught, and they had wrapped his tail in oiled cloth and set it alight to shame him.

उन्होंने होने दिया। फिर वे बढ़े, बन्धन तोड़े, और जलती पूँछ लिए स्वर्ण नगरी की छतों पर दौड़ पड़े।

He let them do it. Then he grew, and slipped the ropes, and went across the rooftops of the golden city with his tail on fire.

दियो कीट करि कंचन लंका। बजि बजरंग बीर की डंका

स्वर्ण की लंका भस्म कर दी गई, और बजरंग बली का डंका बजा।

The golden Lanka was reduced to ash, and the drum of Bajrang Bali sounded.

और उसी जलन के बीच कहीं वे एक तलघर में उतरे और अन्धकार में मुख नीचा किए पड़े हुए नौ को पाया, और उन्हें उठा दिया।

And somewhere in that burning he came down into a cellar and found nine of them lying face down in the dark, and he let them up.

परम्परा कहती है कि उन्होंने हनुमान को वचन दिया: जो सच्चे रूप से हनुमान के भक्त हैं, उन पर वे कठोर नहीं होंगे।

The tradition says he gave Hanuman his word: that those who are truly Hanuman's devotees, he would not press hard.

And in the Shani Mahatmya, when he is explaining himself to Vikramaditya and has no reason to admit anything, he brings this up on his own. He says he has himself been humbled. By Ravana. By Hanuman.

Then he says the line that the whole tradition rests on: the law of karma reigns supreme in creation, and no one can escape it, not even Shani Dev.

रावण ने ऐसा जीवन रचने का प्रयत्न किया था जिसमें कुछ लौटकर न आए। नौ के नौ उसके तलघर में थे और फिर भी उसका सब कुछ गया, क्योंकि किए हुए कर्म के फल को बन्दी नहीं बनाया जा सकता। केवल स्वयं से यह झूठ बोला जा सकता है कि वे कहाँ हैं।

Ravana had tried to build a life where nothing came back to him. He had the nine of them in a cellar and he still lost everything, because you cannot imprison the consequences of what you have already done. You can only lie to yourself about where they are.
