The Village With No Doors
वह गाँव, जिसमें द्वार नहीं हैं
शनि देव ने अपने ऊपर छत नहीं माँगी, और चार सौ वर्ष बाद भी वे खुले में खड़े हैं, धूप और वर्षा अपने ऊपर लिए। उनके चारों ओर बसे गाँव ने इस बात को हृदय से लिया। वहाँ किसी घर में द्वार नहीं है, किसी वस्तु पर ताला नहीं है, और वह गाँव पीढ़ियों से ऐसे ही जी रहा है।
Shani Dev asked for no roof over his head, and four hundred years later he still stands in the open with the sun and the rain on him. The village around him took that to heart. It has no doors on any house, and no locks on anything, and it has lived that way for generations.
उस गड़रिये को क्या मिला What the shepherd found
बाढ़ उतरी और पनसनाला में एक काली शिला छोड़ गई।
The flood went down and left a black stone in the Panasnala.
एक गड़रिया उधर से निकला और उसने उसे छू लिया, जैसे कोई भी किसी अनजानी वस्तु को यह देखने के लिए छूता है कि वह क्या है, और जहाँ उसने छुआ, वहाँ से रक्त बहा।
A shepherd came across it and touched it, the way anyone touches a strange thing to see what it is, and where he touched it, it bled.
उसने उसे वहीं छोड़ दिया। और कोई क्या करता।
He left it where it was. What else do you do.
स्वप्न में मिला आदेश The instruction in the dream
उसी रात शनि देव उसके स्वप्न में आए और बताया कि वह शिला क्या है। स्वयम्भू। स्वयं प्रकट। किसी ने गढ़ी नहीं, कोई वहाँ लाया नहीं।
That night Shani Dev came to him in a dream and told him what the stone was. Swayambhu. Self-manifested. Not carved by anyone and not brought there by anyone.
और उन्होंने एक आदेश दिया, और पूरे वृत्तान्त में वही सबसे विचित्र बात है: मेरे ऊपर छत मत बनाना।
And he gave one instruction, and it is the strangest thing in the whole account: put no roof over me.
मुझे खुले में रहने दो। धूप मुझ पर पड़े, वर्षा मुझ पर पड़े, शीत मुझ पर पड़े। मुझे ढको मत।
Leave me in the open. Sun on me, rain on me, cold on me. Do not shelter me.
उन्होंने वैसा ही किया। शिंगणापुर के स्थान पर साढ़े पाँच फुट की काली शिला खुले आकाश के नीचे खड़ी है, और आज तक उसके ऊपर कोई छत नहीं है।
They did as they were told. The shrine at Shingnapur has a five and a half foot black stone standing in the open air, and there is no roof above it to this day.
और द्वार भी नहीं And no doors either
फिर उस गाँव ने उसके साथ ऐसा कुछ किया जिसे समझाना कठिन है और जिसके साथ जीना कहीं अधिक कठिन।
Then the village did something with that which is harder to explain and much harder to live with.
उन्होंने अपने घरों के द्वार उतार दिए।
They took the doors off their houses.
चौखट नहीं। वे आज भी खड़ी हैं, खाली। द्वार स्वयं चले गए, और पीढ़ियों से नहीं हैं, और किसी वस्तु पर ताला नहीं है।
Not the door frames. Those are still there, standing empty. The doors themselves are gone, and have been for generations, and there are no locks on anything.

The reasoning is exactly what you would expect from him. If he is here, and if he gives each person the fruit of what they have done, then a lock is a statement about how seriously you take that. So they do not have locks.
इस पर विवाद हो सकता है कि क्या वह गाँव सचमुच कभी चोरी से मुक्त रहा है। लोग विवाद करते भी हैं। किन्तु वहाँ से गुज़रिए और उन खाली चौखटों को देखिए, और समझिए कि वहाँ वस्तुतः क्या कहा जा रहा है। एक पूरे गाँव ने यह निश्चय किया है कि वह ऐसे जिए मानो वह हिसाब सचमुच होता है।
You can argue about whether the village has ever really been free of theft. People do argue about it. But walk through it and look at the empty frames, and understand what is actually being said there. A whole village has decided to live as though the accounting is real.
