He Swallows the Sun
उन्होंने सूर्य को निगल लिया
शनि देव न जीते जा सकते हैं, न मोल लिए जा सकते हैं, और यही कथा दोनों बातें सिद्ध करती है। उन्होंने सूर्य को मुख में धर लिया और पाताल में उतार ले गए, और लोकों से प्रकाश चला गया। उसे लौटाने वाला कोई शस्त्र नहीं था। वह एक विनती थी, और उन्होंने उसे तत्काल स्वीकार कर लिया।
Shani Dev cannot be defeated and he cannot be bought, and this is the story that proves both. He took the Sun into his mouth and carried him down into the underworld, and the light went out of the worlds. What brought it back was not a weapon. It was a request, and he granted it at once.

The Chalisa closes its long narrative section with the strangest thing in it.
रवि कहँ मुख महँ धरि तत्काला। लेकर कूदि परयो पाताला
रवि कहँ मुख महँ धरि तत्काला। लेकर कूदि परयो पाताला
उन्होंने रवि को तत्काल मुख में धर लिया, और पाताल में कूद पड़े।
He took Ravi into his mouth at once, and leapt down into Patala.
यही पूरी घटना है। हिन्दी के चार शब्द, और सूर्य चला गया।
That is the whole event. Four words of Hindi and the sun is gone.
वह कैसा दिखता होगा What that would look like
सोचिए कि उस घड़ी लोक कैसे रहे होंगे।
Think about what the worlds would have been in that hour.
कोई प्रभात नहीं आ रहा। रात्रि नहीं, क्योंकि रात्रि तो समाप्त होती है। बस प्रकाश चला गया और उसके लौटने की कोई आशा नहीं, और जो अग्नि किसी ने जलाई वही एकमात्र अग्नि रह गई।
No dawn coming. Not night, because night is a thing that ends. Simply the light gone and no reason to expect it back, and every fire anyone lit being the only fire there was.
और इसके नीचे, यह कोई ब्रह्माण्डीय घटना थी ही नहीं। यह पुत्र और पिता की बात थी। वह पुरुष जिसने जन्म पर उसे नहीं अपनाया, उसी ठुकराए हुए पुत्र के मुख में गया, और उसी अन्धकार में उतारा गया जिसमें वह पुत्र सदा से रहता आया था।
And underneath it, this was not a cosmic event at all. It was a son and a father. The man who would not accept him at birth, taken into the mouth of the child he refused, and carried down into the dark where that child had always lived.
शेषनाग ने युद्ध नहीं किया Sheshnag does not fight him
शेष देव-लखि विनती लाई। रवि को मुख ते दियो छुड़ाई
शेष देव-लखि विनती लाई। रवि को मुख ते दियो छुड़ाई
शेषनाग आए, और विनती लाए, और सूर्य उनके मुख से छूट गए।
Sheshnag came, and brought a petition, and the Sun was released from his mouth.
इसे फिर पढ़िए। किसी ने उनसे युद्ध नहीं किया। कर भी नहीं सकता था। देवों ने सेना नहीं जुटाई और कोई शस्त्र नहीं उठा। शेषनाग आए और उन्होंने माँगा।
Read that again. Nobody fought him. Nobody could have. The gods did not assemble an army and no weapon was raised. Sheshnag came and asked.
और उन्होंने छोड़ दिया।
And he let go.
यही बात उनकी हर कथा में होती है, और केवल यही एक बात कभी काम आई है। विक्रमादित्य ने माँगा और उन्हें लौटा दिया गया। दशरथ ने माँगा और वर्षा बची रही। शेषनाग ने माँगा और सूर्य लौट आए।
This is the same thing that happens in every story about him, and it is the only thing that has ever worked. Vikramaditya asked and was restored. Dasharatha asked and the rains were kept. Sheshnag asked and the sun came back.
उन्हें विचलित करती है एक ठीक ढंग से की गई विनती। कभी कोई भेंट नहीं, और कभी कोई संघर्ष नहीं।
What moves him is a well-made request. Never a payment, and never a struggle.
