Why He Keeps His Eyes Down

वह पति, जो सदा कहीं और था A husband who was always elsewhere

उनका विवाह हुआ था। लोग यह भूल जाते हैं। शनि देव की कथा प्रायः ऐसे कही जाती है मानो वे आरम्भ से ही आकाश में अकेले खड़े थे, और वे अकेले न थे। उनकी पत्नी थी, उनका घर था, और उस घर में कोई प्रतीक्षा करता था।

He was married. People forget that. The story of Shani Dev is usually told as though he stood alone in the sky from the beginning, and he did not. He had a wife, and a house, and someone waiting in it.

और वे भक्त थे। यही बात महत्त्वपूर्ण है। वे कृष्ण के ध्यान में बैठते और घंटे बीत जाते और उन्हें बीतने का पता न चलता। वह उपेक्षा नहीं थी जैसी कोई पुरुष भोग या कार्य के लिए करता है। वह उपेक्षा इसलिए थी कि वे भगवान में लीन थे।

And he was a devotee. That is the part that matters. He would sit down to meditate on Krishna and the hours would go and he would not notice them going. Not neglect as a man neglects a wife for pleasure or for work. Neglect because he was absorbed in God.

वह सन्तान की कामना लेकर उनके पास आई।

She came to him wanting a child.

वह वहाँ खड़ी होकर उनसे बोली और उन्होंने उत्तर नहीं दिया, क्योंकि उत्तर देने के लिए वे वहाँ थे ही नहीं। उसने फिर प्रयास किया। उसने उनका नाम लिया। वह उस कक्ष में प्रतीक्षा करती रही जिसमें एक पुरुष था जिस तक पहुँचा नहीं जा सकता था।

She stood there and spoke to him and he did not answer, because he was not there to answer. She tried again. She said his name. She waited in a room with a man in it who could not be reached.

और उसके भीतर कुछ टूट गया। दुष्टता नहीं। वह विशेष पीड़ा, जो उस वस्तु से दूसरे स्थान पर होने में है जिस पर क्रोध भी नहीं किया जा सकता, क्योंकि भगवान से स्पर्धा कोई कैसे करे।

And something in her broke. Not wickedness. The particular grief of being second to something you cannot even be angry at, because how do you compete with God.

She cursed him. Whatever you look upon, she said, will be destroyed.

He could have argued. He had a case. He had been worshipping, not wasting his life.

उन्होंने कुछ नहीं कहा। उन्होंने वह शाप उसी भाँति स्वीकार किया जिस भाँति वे सबसे उनका अर्जित फल स्वीकार करवाते हैं, और फिर वही एक काम किया जो किसी की रक्षा कर सकता था।

He said nothing. He accepted the curse the way he makes everyone else accept what they have earned, and then he did the only thing left that would protect anybody.

उन्होंने अपनी दृष्टि नीची कर ली।

He lowered his eyes.

उनके हर चित्र में आप यही देख रहे हैं। रूठना नहीं। आपके प्रति तिरस्कार नहीं। एक पुरुष, जो अपनी दृष्टि नीची थामे है ताकि वह आप पर न पड़े। वे तब से यही कर रहे हैं।

That is what you are looking at in every image of him. Not sullenness. Not contempt for you. A man holding his gaze down so that it does not land on you. He has been doing it ever since.

And hold on to the shape of it, because it repeats everywhere in his story. The thing that makes him frightening is a wound. He was punished for loving God too much, and the punishment fell on everyone he would ever look at, and he took the whole weight of it himself and said nothing.
